Melvin Toombs, our loving Father, Husband, and Grandfather passed away on November 5, 2018, at home in Noblesville, IN. He was 67 years old.
Melvin was born June 7, 1951 in Newport News, VA to the late Alvin Toombs and Lillian Knight. He was raised in Newport News graduating from Huntington High School and completing 2 years of trade school to become a Machinist. In all, Melvin worked over 40 years as a Machinist with Sperry, Grumman, Unisys, Reynolds, and the Newport News Shipyard, before retiring with New Jersey Transit.
After completing trade school, Melvin moved to New York where his mother (Lillian) was residing. New York is where he met and fell in love with his wife Thersia Banks-Toombs.
Known for his sense of humor, work ethic and heart, Melvin will be missed by many. Residing between VA and NY over the years, he lived an amazing life…when Melvin was in the room you knew it, he was one of the funniest people you could ever meet.
Melvin was preceded in death by his Father Alvin Toombs, Mother Lillian Knight, Brothers Alvin and Alfred Toombs.
He leaves to mourn, his wife Thersia Banks-Toombs; his only daughter Cassandra Banks (Indiana); son Howard Banks (Indiana); and twin sons Kwasi Carnell Toombs and his wife, Yolanda; and Qudsi Douglas Toombs and his wife, Frances; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren, and a host of family and friends.
Visitation will be from 1 – 4pm on Friday, November 16, 2018. at Indiana Funeral Care, 8151 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis, IN 46250. Memorial service to follow at 4pm.
